Headings

We use headings to help organise the page into scannable chunks and provide clear signposts to the information that the user is looking for.

Web browsers, plug-ins and assistive technologies can use headings to navigate a page.

We use 3 types of headings on the council website:

  • Heading 1 (also known as <h1>) will be the main title of the page,
  • Heading 2 (also known as <h2>) is used as a heading to break up pieces of information, and
  • Heading 3 (also known as <h3>) is used as a subheading within sections of information.

This provides a natural and accessible hierarchy for our content.

We try to keep section and subsection titles as concise as possible.

Page Titles

Page titles have 2 important functions:

  • to clearly tell users the main purpose of the page, and
  • to optimise the page for search, so the information is findable through search engines
